Do I need a separate application? Or am I able to manage and use this within Joomla?

Separate application

Joaktree component is for publishing genealogical data within Joomla. You cannot maintain your data with Joaktree.
1. Yes, you need a separate application for entering and maintaining your genealogical data.
2. From that application you can make an export file (GedCom file).
3. You import the file in Joaktree.
4. In Joaktree you can manage which can view your data depending on their role. This allows you to hide certain information from the general internet, but share with your trusted relations.
